Have beer. It's for your health! New Scientist tells us about how drinking 5 half-pints of Guinness a week will decrease mortality. Beware: It's true only for men over 34 and women over 55. Before that, mortality is increased (maybe because of pub brawls).

A virus created from scratch: Researchers in New York have created a polio virus from inert chemicals obtained from a mail-order catalog. This leads to two questions: Is it now safe to say a virus-based illness is eradicated when it's virus has been scientifically described (a major public health and public security issue)? What is the distance between the Creator and these scientists (though they are quick to tell that this virus is too simple to be considered as a true life form)?

Our ancestor's skull in Chad: The paleontological team led by Michel Brunet just found the fossilized skull of a being that may be the oldest common cousin between man and ape. Two surprises: It's much older than Lucy (7 million years) and it comes from Chad that is not yet famous for these old fossils (usually found in Eastern Africa).
