End of JPEG? Forgent, a small Texan company just started to collect money from rights they have on a patent. Details are still unclear, but Sony appear to have paid 15 million dollars for the right to use JPEG! And the ISO decided to remove JPEG from the list of proposed standards, just because the image file format seems no longer free.
The XBox started selling (really!): The price cuts on the game machine from Microsoft (down to 100$ on the US market) starts pumping the sales up. Time for a real price cut in Europe too.
A limited right to torture: US decided to partner with several "axis of evil" countries to bar part of the UN convention against Torture. After all, under the pretend of protecting the interests of his fellow citizens, Georges W. Bush seems ready to vote with the usuals suspects (China, Cuba, Egypt, Saudi Arabia).
Bible out of Lego bricks : You'd find anything on the web; Even the Brick Testament.
Have a beer. It's for your health! New Scientist tells us about how drinking 5 half-pints of Guinness a week will decrease mortality. Beware: It's true only for men over 34 and women over 55. Before that, mortality is increased (maybe because of pub brawls).
A virus created from scratch: Researchers in New York have created a polio virus from inert chemicals obtained from a mail-order catalog. This leads to two questions: Is it now safe to say a virus-based illness is eradicated when it's virus has been scientifically described (a major public health and public security issue)? What is the distance between the Creator and these scientists (though they are quick to tell that this virus is too simple to be considered as a true life form)?
Our ancestor's skull in Chad: The paleontological team led by Michel Brunet just found the fossilized skull of a being that may be the oldest common cousin between man and ape. Two surprises: It's much older than Lucy (7 million years) and it comes from Chad that is not yet famous for these old fossils (usually found in Eastern Africa).
