The best contemporary Science Fiction authors: A paper on Kuro5hin.org cites: Vernor Vinge, Stephen Baxter, Greg Egan (I'm not fully convinced), Iain M. Banks, Neal Stephenson, Peter F. Hamilton, Orson Scott Card, Kim Stanley Robinson, Richard Morgan, Elisabeth Moon (I don't know these two, yet) and Dan Simmons. It's a good selection overall and the detailed reasons are pretty good.

ZIP for Windows: Too many people use a shareware without paying the required fees. Sometimes, being honest is as simple as using a free software equivalent. Instead of WinZIP, I would advise to go to:

Opera 7.10: I have long been a fan of Netscape because I believe that Microsoft should not be the only player on the browser market. But I should have been looking at Opera. Interestingly, they seem to be the only innovator on the browser market, these days. Opera 7.10 is now available and it is fast, and it has features.
