A new kind of science: Stephen Wolfram, creator of Mathematica and founder of Wolfram Research, slightly out of the norm , published in 2003 a monumental book of 1000 pages where he tries to found science again from a set of very simple bricks. Whether this is a success or not, the attempt is fascinating. Equally fascinating in these times of securing rights to information, he publishes the whole book online. You're not going to print it anyway. But it is refreshing.
