Canon did it again!

(Monday, June 16th, 2008)

Canon is definitely an innovative brand for the marketing of photo products. For years, regarding single lens reflex cameras, Canon specialized in products clearly ahead of their time; I think about the Canon EOS 300D, of course, which surprised/shocked the market with a price so totally different from the rest of the digital SLRs that it allowed a whole new generation of photographers to move to digital. But there was also the Canon EOS 5D to bring a Full Frame sensor which is still appealing to many a photographer (wait for a post about this in a few days).

Canon EOS 1000D / Canon Rebel XS - Front

But Canon does not stop here. A few days ago, the Japan brand announced a Digital SLR, the Canon EOS 1000D / Canon Rebel XS opening the doors of the D-SLR market to those who where still staying with bridge cameras.

Of course, nobody could compare the technical features with the high-end products that is catching our attention in most of the posts here.

  • 10 mega-pixels: it’s not much, but largely enough for 99% of the Sunday photographers
  • 7-area AF: just right
  • Continuous shooting at 3 fps in JPG (or 1,5 fps in Raw): certainly not pro-level, but more than enough to shoot holidays and families
  • 2.5″ LCD with LiveView
  • Price: 699.99€ / £579.99 with a lens (stabilized 18-55mm) or 599.99€ / £499.99 body only.
  • Available August 2008 (no date for USA launch)

Canon EOS 1000D / Canon Rebel XS - Back

If this camera is aiming lower than the current Canon EOS 450D / Rebel XSi, it will still find some competition with the Nikon D60 and the Sony Alpha 200.

Canon EOS 450D / Digital Rebel XSi, let’s start!

(Thursday, January 24th, 2008)

Finally, the announcement that we were expecting from Canon for today (in preparation of next week’s PMA) is about a low-cost consumer D-SLR camera: Canon EOS 450D.

Canon EOS 450D (Digital Rebel XSi)The most significant features are:

  • 12.2 MP CMOS sensor
  • Improved 9-zone AF system
  • Continuous shooting at 3.5fps for up to 53 JPEG (6 RAW)
  • Spot metering
  • 14 bit A/D image processing
  • Highlight Tone Priority (feature borrowed from EOS 40D)
  • Auto Lighting Optimiser (improves the shadows in the image)
  • 3.0″ LCD monitor
  • Live view mode, suported by contrast-detect AF
  • Larger viewfinder
  • Redesigned menus (including My Menu as seen in EOS 40D)
  • New, larger, higher capacity battery
  • SD/SDHC Flash cards
  • New battery grip (BG-E5)

If you add the price to these features ($799 for the body only, or $899 for a kit with the 18-55mm stabilised zoom lens) , you get a camera that should be aptly located on the market. Not a revolution, not an Earth-shake, but a solid contender to give pleasure to many amateur photographers adept of the association of ease of use and performance, without the hassle of the complexity of an EOS 40D and its price.

Canon EOS 450D, seen in Amazon stores

(Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008)

Some Amazon stores are showing accessories compatible with the yet-announced Canon EOS 450D. The speculation is going fast knowing that it is the rumoured replacement for the entry-level D-SLR of Canon. But these Amazon stores are only slightly more regulated than eBay. It is probably only store owner trying to attract visitors.

Canon EOS 5D Mk II or Canon EOS 6D/7D

(Monday, January 21st, 2008)

It’s not only a naming game. Since people are waiting for a possible launch by Canon on the 24th of January, and since they don’t see anything coming during the waiting period, speculations abound. Now the rumour is that Canon will launch only a EOS 450D (or Rebel XTs, Rebel XTS, the silver version of 300D/Rebel XT) at the February PMA and the replacement for the Canon EOS 5D will wait until Photokina.

This would be the occasion for Canon to shoot higher than the supposed slight improvements over the 5D (with a slight name change like EOS 5D Mk II) and pile up major features to fight back Nikon and its most recent D3 and D300 (explaining a move to the more severe name change of EOS 6D or EOS 7D).

Canon 5D replacement, rumours about sensor size

(Saturday, January 19th, 2008)

It’s amazing the number of unfounded rumours flowing currently about the future replacement of the Canon EOS 5D camera, a nice Full Frame digital SLR from the market leader. It seems that Canon has put a tight cover on all information, it is quite probable that an announcement will be made on 24th of January (but will it be a replacement for the 5D or for the smaller 400D/Rebel Xti?), and people start creating rumours just for fun.

Recently, I noticed the information about the sensor size of the future 6D or EOS 5D mk II (just in January):

  • 12 MP (unchanged from EOS 5D)
  • 16 MP
  • 18 MP
  • 24 MP

Either, Canon invented the technology to reconfigure the sensor size on-the-fly, or the vast majority of these guesstimates are plain wrong…

Canon 450D / Rebel XTi replacement

(Friday, December 28th, 2007)

I found an old post on PhotoGraphyBay that is trying to describe the upcoming Canon EOS 450D (the supposed replacement for the current EOS 400D / Rebel XTi). I would say that this is pure speculation, but so many people are now expecting it to appear on the 24th of January, that I could not let if pass without mention.

New Canon products on 24th of January 2008

(Wednesday, December 19th, 2007)

According to PhotoBlog, Canon is about to announce new photo products on the 24th of January just before the PMA fair in Las Vegas.

Obviously, they do not have more information than anybody else on what will be announced really. But they speculate on a replacement for the EOS 400D/Rebel Xti (Canon EOS 450D, maybe) or a replacement for the EOS 5D (either Canon EOS 6D or Canon EOS 5D Mk II, depending on who you ask to).
