My daily web visits
Where do I want to go today?
Where do I go to have my daily dose of fun and knowledge? It may not
be everyday, but I regularly go and spend some time on these sites. A
lot of fun (and some learning experience!).
The Register: These British guys
collect an amazing amount of technical news. And they are quite readable
(if you forget about all those phrases and sentences that only a London
native could understand). And they are really up to date with hot technology!
A must-read web site.
- Direct competition to The Register, edited by Mike Magee (who came
from The Register): The
Inquirer. It may be less pleasant to read, but it's of the
highest quality.
ArsTechnica is a surprisingly good web site for technicians
(I should say techno-geeks or technophiles. Most average
John Doe's will be frightened out of the site by the dense material
but this is a very well organized storage of impressive quality.
Dwellers
of the dreaded cubicle plains will go and meet the wild animals of the
Dilbert
zone. Look for Wally's adaptation to the local natural conditions.
You will be surprised to recognize a few fellow workers and individuahs!
Even
less civilized people (hunter-gatherers of the web design and high-tech
startups) will find their semi-god heroes at User
Friendly.
- There is an excellent news site about digital photography - and it
is updated on a nearly-daily basis: DPReview.com.
Additionnaly, the forums are choke-full with interesting exchanges and
information, and are hosts to a number of really good photos.
- Tom's Hardware
Guide is the mother of all web sites about computer hardware.
Can be found in various languages (each with its own local material
on top of common articles):
- News specifically about Peer-to-peer (P2P) Slyck.com.
Serious, full of interesting data - or so it seems. Updates may be irregular
at times, though.
Some other web sites I do not check so regularly, but they may come into
my daily diet if they are interesting enough for a time long enough.
In
order to have good data about digital imaging (scanners, printers, cameras,
software, etc.), I jump into Imaging
Resource. They seem very deep and serious even though the
updates are not coming often enough for me to put them in the primary
list.
- When i'm tired of CNN, LeMonde.fr, and other serious news sites, I
jump into the lake of fake news distilled by BBspot.com.
