Artificial Intelligence to upscale photographs

Did you notice that I am interested in/attracted by Artificial Intelligence? Among various tests, here is a nice little resulting application for digital photographers. I finally found how to significantly (x4) increase the resolution of my photographic pictures (upscaling) without losing details.

An AI allowed me to recreate the “missing pixels” to build a picture several times larger than the original; ideal for an ultra-large print.

I know that publishing here on a more or less regular basis my new photos from my own adventures in the wild world is appreciated by some. But I am also asked to come back to older photos or to highlight some of the pictures I prefer.

So, I decided to create a kind of online portfolio in order to show only a severely reduced number of images – but specially curated to keep only those I really love. Thus they will become alittle more accessible.

But it became also the opportunity to share some of my intentions behind the pictures (in French). I don’t always randomly shoot pictures . I have some projects, some ideas, some intent. Sometimes, I can assemble them in a lighter package grouped around a common tune I chose. These portfolios now become available on :

Moscow under the sunhine

What better weather to visit Moscow and some of its most famous monuments?

The rest of the Moscow city center is somewhat surprising for a European capital city: A mix of centuries-old architecture, communist-era industrialism, modern-times tourism.

Zero digital noise photography

A few years ago I had written about Guillermo Luijk’s technique to remove completely noise from digital photos. We know that this is a difficult task, but his solution is relatively simple:

Shot the scene in a correct exposure according to our usual workflow;
Repeat the shot now reducing shutter speed by 4 f-stops that will be corrected in the RAW development (this grossly over-exposed shot will keep shadow details without digital noise);
Blend in some way both images obtaining a free of noise final image.

Guillermo Luijk had published his software application and I did not mention it. So, let me correct this error and give you Zero Noise.

A few bears from the Great North

The polar bears were found in the North of Nunavut, Canada, in August 2016. There were a few beluga whale carcasses in Conningham Bay. So much food that bears were very relaxed and did not care much about our zodiac boat (and or cameras). So, we could shoot a few good pictures of this great male and a few others (including the mother and child that are appearing in several of the images).

Polar bears are marine mammals

Most people tend to forget it, but polar bears are living in the sea. They tend to get out to the ground (and be photographed more easily there), but they are more than at ease in the water.

Musk ox

Musk ox is assuredly a weird animal. They look a bit like a bison, but they are much smaller. As a matter of fact, they are more a goat with a long coat than a cow (the hair is a good protection against cold weather).

It’s not easy to approach them (we saw a few of them frightened by human presence at a couple of kilometers distance), but an isolated individual at the end of its life is easier on the photographer.

Red-throated loon’s family

Already a few days ago, I had shown this great brid, the red-throated loon in flight, because it is a marvelously gorgeous bird. But after a few days, we could also find a mother with two chicks in a small pool near Fort Ross. This gives us the possibility to admire it on the surface of water.

Neighbours bickering on Prince Leopold Island cliffs

When tens of thousands of birds nest on the same cliff face, conflicts cannot be fully avoided. But when your neighbour needs to literally trample your own bed to reach his room, shouting is soon not enough.

It seems kittiwakes are permanently bickering. This could be easily understood from the fact there is limited space to build a nest and a bird would not want to lose its chance to reproduce. But kittiwakes are specially active.

Polar bear in Bellot Strait

When crossing Bellot Strait, so narrow and so emblematic of the centuries-long search for the Northwest Passage, we came across this bear which seemed to be interested in mountain climbing (or those bird nests perched halfway up on the so-colourful rock).
