Laidley wrote a nice paper to explain it in an interesting way: He shows the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.totse.com\/en\/technology\/computer_technology\/surge.html\">11 Myths of Surge Protection<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Any surge protection is better than no surge protection<\/li>\n<li>A UPS will provide dependable surge protection<\/li>\n<li>Transformers are the best surge protectors<\/li>\n<li>Voltage-regulating transformers are helpful with computers<\/li>\n<li>Common mode surges cause computer problems<\/li>\n<li>Computer modem damage is caused by surge on the phone line<\/li>\n<li>Signal ground is isolated from chassis ground<\/li>\n<li>The only risk from the power line is hardware damage<\/li>\n<li>Surge protectors are permanent devices<\/li>\n<li>Nothing can stop lightning<\/li>\n<li>You get what you pay for<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>All those myths!
