Weird: All our error pages

(Thursday, November 29th, 2007)

When you follow a broken link in this web site, you will fall onto an error page. Of course, this does not happen very often (Ed.: I hope so!); I decided to give you a direct list of the error pages to answer to the standard erorr code 404 page not found.

Nikon D300: not cheap, but with free software

(Tuesday, November 27th, 2007)

At least during the launch period and in the UK, Nikon will include a free CD-ROM of the Capture NX excellent imaging software in the box of the new Nikon D3 and Nikon D300 cameras. Some people having perceived the price of the Nikon D300 as too high, may be tempted by this offer.

Leaked images of Canon EOS 5D Mk II

(Tuesday, November 27th, 2007)

Since the recent leak of the name of the newest full-frame sensor D-SLR from Canon (Canon EOS 5D Mk II), there was a post on DPreview forums showing what are -allegedly- images of this camera. It seems too good to be true, or the camera is nearly ready for announcement.

This bird is also known in South Brazil, where it is very common, as Quero Quero because of its cry (in French Vanneau téro).

DRAM and NAND Flash markets still very low

(Monday, November 26th, 2007)

Manufacturers of DRAM chips and NAND Flash modules still see the market as one long nightmare they cannot wake up from. There is a permanent oversupply that does not seem to be reduced by the end-of-the-year purchases. Taiwan DRAM makers are worried because they do not even see a reason why this should improve in the coming weeks.

This means that if you need either DRAM modules to upgrade your computer or Flash memory cards, you are both quite alone on this market and prices should be nice to you.

All images from the Moon

(Monday, November 26th, 2007)

NASA finally decided to publish high-resolution scans of all the photos taken by the Lunar Apollo expeditions in the 60′s and 70′s. A huge publication work but that is welcome remembering the enormous successes and horrendous claims that accompany them.

Canon EOS 5D Mk II

(Monday, November 26th, 2007)

Logo of Canon (digital photo cameras)We don’t know much about the future successor to the excellent digital single-lens reflex camera Canon EOS 5D (the first D-SLR with a nearly affordable full-frame sensor). It is still uncertain that it’s name will really be EOS 5D Mk II, but it’s now definitely possible since Phase One, editor of the high-end photo retouching software Capture One, let appear this name in its bug submission form (in the camera list).

Since the Canon EOS 40D name was also leaked in a similar way, we can easily conclude that, despite the lack of precise specifications, the name of the future full-frame sensor digital camera from Canon will be EOS 5D Mk II.

More Crysis madness

(Sunday, November 25th, 2007)

CrysisCrysis, the First Person Shooter PC game of the year is already upon us, but the marketing frenzy is not finished and news are pouring in relation with this FPS game. Let’s have a look at what ended up on this desktop and that I’d like to share.

  • Crysis will be part of a trilogy. After FarCry, Crytek decided to start a three-part set of games with Crysis. This is branding at its best following in the footsteps of others like Civilization, Grand Theft Auto. This explains the sharp end of the game: It’s just the beginning.
  • Some problems appeared in multiplayer mode. Connecting to the game servers was abnormally difficult (not only an issue of players rushing to the latest MP game). A hot patch is expected. In the mean time, kludges are available at inCrysis fan site.
  • The drivers for graphics cards from AMD-ATI and nVidia are regularly updated to improve performance with the hit software. Latest as of today is a fix from AMD for the Radeon HD 2000 and 3000, but nVidia is certainly trying to get another small improvement, too.
  • More and more companies started bundling Crysis with their best and most recent graphics cards (sometimes adding just the CD-ROM, sometimes adding a Crysis-themed sticker to the card). Let’s just list:
    • GeForce 8800 from eVGA
    • ASUS GeForce 8800GT series
  • Even some mobile computers will be able to run Crysis (already a famous resource hog): The nVidia GeForce 8880M GTX mobile chipset is being readied just for that purpose. A demonstrative video comparing 8600 and 8800 graphics chipsets.

Canon EOS 40D: firmware upgraded again

(Sunday, November 25th, 2007)

After going to version 1.0.4, we hear that the firmware for the Canon EOS 40D camera is now in version 1.0.5.

I balance between the admiration for a company (Canon) that do not hesitate to quickly correct the bugs of its software and the impatience o seeing the device was obviously not ready for the market when it has been made available.

Yahoo! to be sold? Microsoft ready to buy?

(Sunday, November 25th, 2007)

Here comes a weird news even when the worlds of finance and technology collide at high speed. However, this si the core of a rumour running around these days, more precisely since a Microsoft press conference held by Kevin Johnson, their president for Platforms and Services Division, where he told that Microsoft could reach a 30% market share for online search services.

In some countries like France, Google covers more than 90% and this helps forget about the small results of Microsoft MSN Search. At a global level, Microsoft has definitely less than 10% of market share. How to triple this? A gigantic quantum technology leap that would shake the market and change the hierarchy over night? Nobody would bet on this. So, Microsoft must be ready to buy a significant competitor. The most probable one would then be Yahoo!

But is Yahoo really on sale, even if some rumours had been heard a little earlier this year?

A little less than 20% of market share to catch? At what price? When?

First images taken from the Nikon D300

(Saturday, November 24th, 2007)

Imaging Resources has a few test images shot with a brand new Nikon D300 digital camera (click on the Samples tab). The camera seems to be up to the expected level. Despite its very high price of $1800, I would expect that quality image lovers will be hesitating even when comparing with cameras set at a lower price point (like the Canon EOS 40D or the Sony Alpha 700).
