I attempted to follow all of your instructions, but I hit a wall when I attempted to enter the “Additional command-line options” under External Compression. I wasn’t sure if some of those were spaces and I couldn’t seem to figure how to enter that last character which looks like a “.” (period), but looks like it is a superscript! Sure enough, when I attempted my first extraction, I received an error message concerning the compression.

Unfortunately, my husband sat down to the computer before I could get a screen-shot and now the message is gone. Hope you don’t need it to tell me how to correctly enter those “Additional command-line options”. This is what I entered: -8 -V -T “ARTIST=%artist%” -T “TITLE=%title%” – (without that last character). Can you please help?

We need to be careful of any information published by companies or any research subsidized by them. This is especially true in the field of surge protection. There is so much misinformation and shady business practices. For example, manufacturers will frequently inflate the specifications of their MOV surge protectors. Warranties are not honored. Claims in ads are misleading.

The problem is there is very little independent research. And, since the field is so technical, consumers are easily confused and misled.

For example, Wendell claims that “Surge protection is better than no surge protection.” is a myth. It’s not a myth. A surge protector will be better than nothing, except when you also protect data lines with the same surge protector. You notice that he doesn’t advise against connecting data lines to your MOV surge protectors. He’s hoping you won’t buy them at all, and buy his.

Thanks for asking. I appreciate your interest, and I invite people to exploit my photos for personal use. However, I require licensing for professional use (even when not sold). I do not accept uploading to wallpaper and theme sites, apart from isolated/approved cases.

It is not a very active hobby, but I would be glad to be able to add this to the list (both original unmodified version and hacked-up version, if you agree). I’ll drop you a mail. Thanks a lot.

With a little hacking, I was able to get it to compile on Windows 7, Cygwin under Windows 7, and Linux.
Of course I kept a copy of the unmodified version 🙂

A long needed update: HyperBackup from Synology is working marvelously. I use it to store the archives on Amazon Cloud Service and on HuBic with equal ease and equal success.

1. Cloud Drive must not be used with versioning. This is leading to a huge expansion of the used disk space, even without touching to most of the files. I decided to re-install it and to not archive the file versions.
2. Since this left me without any version protection (quite useful or necessary if I fell prey to some ransomware), I decided to move from Synology Cloud Sync (with Amazon Cloud Drive) to a stronger solution using Synology HyperBackup (also to Amazon Cloud Driver). All the versions are stored on Amazon instead of my DSM.

This is currently building the images. I’ll evaluate this here, in a few days.

Global climate change? The whole country is observing the glaciers flowing back up. The straits are opening more and more in Summer. This year, we travelled in about the opposite direction of the Crystal Serenity (a 1000+ passenger cruise ship) which was the first to attempt (and succeed, I believe) in crossing the whole NorthWest Passage. They had an ice-breaker, just in case, but I’m afraid that from what we saw, they did not need it at all on most of the trip.

Just remember that a couple of centuries ago, desperate boats and fishermen attempting to extract themselves from ice floes after spending a harsh Winter in parts of the NW Passage, sometimes succeeded at moving by… less than 20 miles in the whole Summer. This was not a passage…

This year, we had to go around some ice to avoid risking a call for assistance. Nothing life-threatening.

But we did not observe the orcas (killer whales) that are going North in the most recent years, because… now they can. And many other things are less obviously perceptible.

Climate change denial? No way.
